Block scheduling
by rknelson

Our high school has had accelerated block schedule for almost a decade now with 18-week courses, 90-minute classes. What do you think about block scheduling? Do you love it/hate it? What are the advantages and disadvantages in your opinion?

(Answer in complete sentences, please. Proofread carefully for proper spelling and grammar!!)

I don't have a problem with the block scheduling.... just for the fact that they're too long for me to pay attention the whole time. Maybe if they were shorter periods they wouldn't be that bad.

I don't really like the fact that our classes are 90 minutes. In middle school our 8th grade year classes were 45 minutes, that was great! The only class that is actually short is Advisory, but really it's okay because I get out at lunch.

The classes are way too long. It's easier to get your homework done at school in class. But harder for you to focus the whole 90 min of class. I like it because it makes school go by faster and no homework usually.

I kinda like the new schedule, because we have less homework well as a senior lol...the advantages for this accelerated block schedule is that we can sleep more in some classes, and like I said before, have less homework, and you got time to do your work in class.

I like it... It give us more time to learn and do our homework in class... We do not have any after school or over the weekend... And there is a disadvantage about the whole thing too... Sometimes the class gets tiring and you get bored during the class period... But that is about it there are some up's and some down's....

I think it's better than it was last year. We had more time last year than we do this year. It takes longer but it's ok. I think it is fine to me; it doesn't bother me. Last year we would have a break but we don't this year. You only have five minutes to get to your next class then the time flies by really fast.

Well I like it cause we don't have Math and English in the same semester, which if we did it would be a lot more work and harder on us because those are the two major subjects in school. Well on the other hand the classes are really long and it gets boring after awhile which results in many people not paying attention.

I don't have a problem with the block schedule. But the classes are too long. There are advantages like advisory you can do your homework in or just sit and talk.

I am just fine with the accelerated block schedule. Having a accelerated block schedule makes it easier for me. Keeping a routine really makes things easier for everyone and plus you know what to expect in the next class. I have no problem with the accelerated block schedule. Although, some classes are a little long.

I love the block scheduling because we can have more time in one class. I also love it because it is easier to remember what classes I have. Another reason is because I don't have a lot of homework because I can finish it before that class is over. One advantage is we don't have to go to 8 classes every day. A disadvantage is that if there is a boring class we have to stay in there for 90 minutes.

Well it's okay. I just don't like the fact that it is so long because some of us are fast workers and get done before others. Then it gets really boring and you just want to talk. I wish we had eight periods instead of five periods because it goes faster with eight 45 minute periods.

I don't like it... That's for sure, but it does have advantages... Like if you don't do your homework you have Advisory.. So it's ok I think...

BUT I DONT LIKE IT!

Okay block scheduling is good. Wait....No, block scheduling is bad. How bout I say it's goad. Half good and half bad. Or maybe bood. As long as it gets me out of classes, I like it. But then I won't learn....so I don't like it. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that block schedule was a great idea. I like the fact that I only have to go to algebra one semester and English one semester a year. Plus, longer classes mean fewer classes, and I usually don't have as much homework.

Well, I think the classes are too long...it gets kinda boring sitting in a classroom for 90 minutes. It makes me really sleepy. If the classes were shorter, then I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I like the new scheduling. There are less classes as for less work. In middle school there where more classes so it seemed like the day went by slow, but with the block scheduling you look up and it's 3rd period and the day is half over already.

hm, I like block scheduling, but then I don't. I like the fact that we don't have algebra and English in the same semester, but 90 minutes of class kills. I guess we can learn more in 90 minutes, but if you're ahead of the class, then you just sit there and wait, and it gets quite boring.

I don't like block scheduling, because when we got TAKS for math at the end of the year, we haven't done math for a whole semester. It leaves us completely unprepared. Unless you want us to fail, keep block scheduling.

I don't really like the 90 minute classes. They are torture. But having different classes every semester isn't so bad.

I think the longer classes are good because it gives us more time to work on our worksheets and tests, and we learn a lot more in a day than we did back in middle school. It's really good that we have math one semester and English the other because both classes have a lot of work and that would be way too much, but it is a lot easier to keep up with 5 classes instead of 8. A disadvantage of block schedule is that the classes get boring when you get finished with your work early and have nothing to do.

I do like the block schedule for the most part, but a few seem as if they last forever.I wish we could walk around more though.

I really like that we have longer class periods, because we get more time in class to learn new things. It's really hard for teachers to rush through a lecture and not have the time to teach every student in their class. So I think that the longer class periods really help. But I also don't like that we have 90 minute classes, because it's hard for students to pay attention in a class that lasts for so long. I personally have trouble paying attention in class because it's hard for me to sit and be quiet and listen to a long lecture, but I try to.

So it does have its advantages and disadvantages.

It is alright. I don't really like how long the classes are but it gives you a chance to get more work done in class so you have less homework. The disadvantage is that they seem to go by really slow and you start to lose focus. I also like how we change classes next semester so we don't have math and English to do.

I don't really care about the accelerated block schedule, but I think that I liked having 8 classes a day instead. I think it is going to be harder to pass a class that you are not doing so well in. Can't think of any advantages.

I like the new block schedule. One advantage of the block schedule is that you really don't have as much homework because you usually have enough time to finish your work in class. I also enjoy not having eight classes a day, because I hated having to be in a class for about 30 minutes it seemed like and then have to get up and go to another one. So overall I like the block schedule a lot more than the eight classes a day.

There are ups and downs when it comes to accelerated block. First, the classes are long; allowing us more time to work as well as more time to play around when we're done with everything. Next, it's easier to have Math and English in different semesters because they're both pretty challenging if you're in all Honors Classes. Last, if you're a really fast worker and you get done before everyone else, you're compelled to talk, because its human nature, to other students who are not finished or finished and you end up getting into trouble. Accelerated Block is both positive and negative.

I like block scheduling because it makes us students less rushed and if we finish earlier than expected we get to just mess around with other classwork. But I don't like it because it gets boring and tedious listening to the same teacher explain the same things over and over in an hour and a half's time. Personally I fight not to fall asleep in the more dull subjects. Taking that into mind, the school day seems to last forever and a day! So I guess I like it for the partial relaxation and unstressed class time, but there is definitely something weird happening when I'm making a pillow out of my sweater before lunch.

I like the fact that we only have 5 classes, but 90 minutes is way too long. I can't pay attention the whole time; and I'm sure I'm not the only one. An advantage of would be getting to do your homework in class. There's just so much time that some of the teachers give it to us with about 20 minutes left.

First of all, things are so different than last school year, because classes change over a period of time. There's nothing really too bad about this year's schedule, except I don't have hardly any classes with my friends, but the best thing about every class I have is, that I hardly ever get homework, unlike last year, but in the mean time, I know things are going to get hard, and then I'm going to gripe about it, and not want to do homework. But as the year goes by I'll regret it, because I probably won't have a passing grade to top off my school year, so I'm fine with the fact, that I have a new and improved schedule. So I like it a lot, and I can deal with it.

I hate the ninety minutes blocks that we have at our school. Class is entirely too long it feels like you're in there for a century. Then it's always cold where ever you go so not only do you have to be in class forever, you have to be cold as well. So I personally hate the ninety minute block if I must say.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with the schedules. I like all my classes...
&&&I like how I'm able to get all the work finished that needs to be:)
BUT,
I hate how long the classes are!
It's seriously not even necessary to have 90 minute classes. I would rather go back to having regular 45 minute classes than having to MAKE myself pay attention for an hour and a half.. EACH DAY!
cause ohmyjheezee, lord knows I can't stay focused for longer than 5 minutes!

I like it cause we don't get as much homework. But there is one thing that I do not like during the classes you can get really tired and fall asleep and sometimes people can't afford to go to sleep.

On the one hand, I like having longer classes to finish tests and worksheets, so we don't have as much homework. Also, only having 5 classes is less of a hassle. Its good that we have time to work, but listening to the same teacher and hearing about the same subject for so long can get really boring.

Disadvantages are you have to sit in a class for a long period of time.

Ummm.... I don't like block scheduling because the classes feel way too long.. I like to have 45 minute classes like we did in Middle School because the day went by much shorter. I don't think that you should have to sit in a classroom for 90 minutes because that is way too long. But the good advantage is that you can get your homework done more than you did in Middle School.. But all in all it's ok I guess.

Well I actually don't mind the longer period classes because it gives us more time to understand things instead of being rushed in our lessons. And also to me eight classes a day were way too stressful. So it's actually easier for me, so I would say it is an advantage.

Disadvantages are that the classes get tiring during the long time period.

I like our block scheduling because it separates the hard classes into 2 semesters. If we had all our classes in one day we would have a lot of homework everyday! Also, I would hate to have a class year-round. I like changing my schedule completely half-way through the year.
